The PR Negotiations of JD Drew

The tug-of-war for media supremacy between the Patriots and Red Sox has gone from non-existent to embarrassing to the current state of conscious respect. Since 2002, both clubs have increased success on the field and in the stands nearly ten-fold. So much so that the JD Drew negations have been put on hold to allow the Patriots to have their fair share of the Sports Page and the undivided attention of the region’s football diehards and off-season Sox fans alike.

Well, ok, not really. But it isn’t far off.

What’s wrong with his shoulder? Will he play in 145+ games? What if he doesn’t? Why did he get a 5-year deal after you’ve stubbornly denied it to players in the past? What are Sox fans to expect of him? Why is he JD if his name is David Jonathan?

The Sox are going to need a silent room and a blank page come JD’s presser. JD's stock falls slightly every day and all possible story angles, monetary values, ligaments and muscle fibers will need to be presented, questioned, and answered clearly to sway the skeptics. Any attention taken away from the Sox during this time will lead to misjudgment, contract criticism, and an overall no-win situation that another over-paid, under-performing player in the AL East endures.

What does this mean? Wait until the bye-week. Let the pigskin mouth breathers wear down their theories and squeeze any last quotes out of Foxborough's Finest. Hell, if something actually comes up (Asante is taking a discount!) it’ll allow some time for that news to flatten as well.

Regardless, we’ll hear the story. I just hope it’s quiet enough for us to hear the real story.

Congrats on a great start, Dover!

I'm not sure anything will sway the skeptics on Drew--even though my own thinking is that Theo and Boras are both so sure that a deal WILL eventually be struck that they're not in a big rush, which is the reverse of the way most folks seem to be viewing things. But I keep thinking about the reception afforded Lowell last year, when the doubters kept using the phrase "slow bat" long after it was clear he was off to a great start. I just want to see the guy get a fair shake and be judged on his performance, and I think it's as much a function of the modern net-fueled hot stove as anything that's the fault of the front office that he's already been tried, convicted and hung by not a few before he's even put on the uniform.

My other sporting love is horse racing. In the weeks and days and especially the last 45 minutes leading up to a race, everyone considers all the available evidence, asks the questions and determines the answers... and then the race goes off and most people are wrong. ^_^ Ditto with the Hot Stove, as far as I'm concerned!
